Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
...It's interesting because several years ago,
JKR patented "Harry Potter and the Hallows of Hogwarts" and also "Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Hallows". So, I guess the word we should be focusing on is Hallows.
Most everyone seems to think the Hallows are the Horcruxes. (In Arthurian lore, "hallows" are king's regalia. So, quite naturally, the Horcruxes seem to be the obvious choice. OR, they could be objects of "kings" ... aka, the Founders' items. See
this link for info on a variation of the Arthurian Hallows. Interestingly enough, we have a magical sword (Gryffindor's Sword, anyone?) and a magical cup (Hufflepuff's cup?). There are also a coin/stone and a wand.
Put more simply: (legendary item; HP item;
element)
1. The Pole of Combat; a wand?; fire.
2. The Sword of Light; Gryffindor's sword; air.
3. The Cauldron of Cure; Hufflepuff's cup; water.
4. The Stone of Destiny; Philosopher's Stone? / Slytherins' ring?; earth.
Another interesting thing to note is the "Lady of the Lake", who is said to have guarded the Hallows. (Is anyone with me on the Giant Squid?)
(Sidenote: There are also 13 Hallows of Britain, which I'll include if anyone is interested:
1. 'Dyrnwyn, the Sword of Rhydderch the Generous';
Possessing the ability to burst into flame.
2. 'The Hamper of Gwyddno Garanhir';
Possessing the ability to turn one meal into one-hundred meals.
3. 'The Horn of Bran';
Possessing the ability to provide any drink.
4. 'The Chariot of Morgan the Wealthy';
Possessing the ability to travel at great speed to any location.
5. 'The Halter of Clyno Eiddyn';
Possessing the ability to provide a horse of the seeker's choice.
6. 'The Knife of Llawfronedd the Horseman';
Possessing the ability to cut enough food for twenty-four men.
7. 'The Cauldron of Diwrnach the Giant';
Possessing the ability to heat the food for a hero but not a coward.
8. 'The Whetstone of Tudwal Tudglyd';
Possessing the ability to ensure death would follow wounding.
9. 'The Coat of Padarn Red-Coat';
Possessing the ability to identify those of noble birth.
10. 'The Crock of Rhygenydd';
Possessing the ability to provide favourite foods.
11. 'The Dish of Rhygenydd';
Possessing the ability to provide favourite foods.
12. 'The Chessboard of Gwenddolau';
Possessing the ability to play by itself.
13. 'The Mantle of Arthur'.
Possessing the ability to make the wearer invisible to any observer. )
(Edit: Whoops, posted this before I saw that it was posted before me. Guess we found the same link, lol. Nice. I hope it's okay if I leave it in here.)
What else have we got? The Hallows could be a place. The word "hallow" also refers to the act of consecrating something or revering it. Possible ideas:
- Hogwarts Graveyard (I haven't heard anything about this, but I could have missed something. Some people were mentioning it somewhere else.)
- Dumbledore's tomb
- Graveyard from book four
- Ministry of Magic (the veil room?)
- Chamber of Secrets (I'm putting my money on this one, because of all the recent running bits in the books that refer back to book two)
- Godric's Hollow (perhaps Slytherin's version?)
"Hallows" is, primarily, a verb. So it could refer to a "deathly" act of revering something. (Reminds me of Voldemort's method of making Horcruxes.)
Then again, the title could just have something to do with Halloween.

EDIT to add: an alternate version of "hallow" from the Oxford Universal:
1. To pursue with shouts; to urge on with shouts; to call or summon.
2. To shout, in order to urge on dogs to the chase, attract attention, etc.
Sounds like a rallying cry to me. Just wanted to throw that out there in case anyone could run with it.
